Fall Style on a Teacher Budget

Hi friends.  Today I am sharing a few trends that I am on board with and a few options for you to purchase on a budget.  I just purchased a small haul from H & M to fill the void in my closet, but there are a couple of other trends that I am excited for and may look to bring in over time or will be shopping my closet for.

MAIN TIP: You don't need to have everything, rather focus on a few pieces that you want to use to spice up your current closet.  Shop your closet first and then decide what you want to add.  A specific color, style, or accessory.

#1 Browns & Earth Tones

Brown, specifically chocolate brown, is continuing to show up this fall.  Since I do want to update some of my work trousers, I did purchase one pair of dark brown trousers and a brown cardigan (cardigan's are also very popular this season).  Brown pairs well with blue, black, gray, hunter green and taupe.  Keep it neutral and think sky, water, forest.

H&M Buckle-Detail Dress Pants $29.99

#2 Lace & Leopard Prints

I am combing two trends in one.  I am seeing both of these  a lot in slip skirts.

  • Slip skirts with a lace trim.  I really wanted to add this to my closet but I am waiting to see if the leopard slip skirt is going to be a fit for me before I buy more, plus I already have a dark green floral pattern slip skirt in my closet which I may just use instead.  You can also think of lacey tops, lace trim camisoles, lacey socks or lacey print tights.
Dynamite Lace Trim Slip Skirt $30 (sale)

RW & Co Lacey Top on sale $19.99

  • Leopard print slip skirts.  Leopard print is never out of style, but it's back in a big way this year.  So get a dress, pants, or skirt for the season.  Leopard print is super easy to style once you think of it as a neutral. I purchased the below skirt from H&M and am really hoping it works.  I'll be pairing it with a number of pieces including the  brown cardigan, red knit top for a bold look, crisp white tee, a graphic tee, leather jacket, cozy beige sweaters, and a black turtleneck. The list goes on!
H&M Leopard Print Slip Skirt $29.99

#3 Polo Style Tops
Think Ralph Lauren at the horse track but in a knit.  I purchased a knitted red and blue top that my daughter said gave her the "English riding" vibe and although it doesn't have a collar it still fits into this category.  I also found this gem on the H & M site and am very excited about styling it for casual Fridays with jeans, but also with a suede brown skirt, layered over a collard dress shirt, with a long denim skirt, over trousers, or pairing it up with a little tennis skirt on those dwindling warm summer days.  Also, I know my girls will be borrowing this from my closet so it'll get lots of wear.

H&M Loose-Fit Polo Shirt $34.99

#4 Lightweight Sweaters/Cardigans
Fitted cardigans from like 8 years ago are back big time and can be found in tons of colors like the ones below at really good prices.   I order a brown one, a blue one and I really would like to also add a gray one.  They are perfect as a layering piece over tanks, camisoles or dresses, or on their own as a top.  You instantly look put together when wearing a cardigan!

H&M Cable Knit Cardigan $34.99

I also, added a lightweight sweater that like a polo shirt can be layered with a collared shirt or a turtleneck, or work on it's own.  Sweaters that have a touch of "preppy" to them are having a big moment.  Think lady like, gold or special buttons or even broches.

H&M Red Knit Sweater $44.99

#5 Slouchy Bags and Oversized Tote Bags
I am kind of seeing both of these out in the world right now.  I am not purchasing one because I already have a suede (another big trend) brown slouchy like purse so I don't need to invest money into that.  That being said let's look at the two options.
  •  A slouchy purse is perfect for completing any outfit and isn't too large but fits everything you need.
Gap Suede Slouchy Bag $89.99

  • The oversized tote bag is perfect if you are lugging a laptop on the go to meetings, a university student, or are a parent of a small child but don't want to carry a diaper bag.  So you decide, what's best for your situation.
Simons Large Square Tote Bag $89

There are lots of other trends out there such as dark denim for jeans, faux fur jackets, plaid,  dresses and skirts with tons of volume, etc.  In this post my goal was o stay with the average person in mind and what they might have in their closets and how they can incorporate a few new pieces to update their wardrobe for fall while being selective and sticking to a budget.

One thing I will be splurging on are a few new pairs of shoes, including new loafers in a nuteral color like white or tan, and I would love to get a pair of Mary-Janes, and also I need to update my regular black heels.  Also, slouchy boots are having a moment and lucky for me I already have a pair!

Let me know if this post was helpful, what you want to see more of, or what trends you are excited about.  Over on IG I will be showcasing some of these pieces over the month of September so that you can see how I am styling them for fall 2025.

Ageless Style: Spring 2024 Colors Styled

Welcome to our special segment called Ageless Style, where we celebrate women of all ages and their styles every third Thursday of the month.  Today we are talking all about spring 2024 color palette and we are using the Pantone USA fashion colors for inspiration.  I am choosing to showcase a street style outfit featuring the pastel lilac color of the season.  I actually added this lilac cardigan  last spring and I have reached for it over and over again. I've worn it over a dress, with white trousers for work and jeans countless times.  Its so easy to throw on and style.  Honestly it adds a great pop of color to any simple outfit combination, and because of it's boxy cropped cut, I usually keep everything else pretty slim to even out the proportions.  I love the oversize button details when I wear it buttoned up but it's actually super cute over a dress unbuttoned as well.  Some other ways I've added lilac to my wardrobe is a simple pair of slides for the summer, getting my nails done with a light purple or simply adding a new clutch or purse in the color for spring.

The other pantone color I am excited to play around this year would be the red-orange of Orangeade (bold) and I am happy to bring back the Chambray blue into my closet (see my nails, I am already incorporating it into my spring style 😉).

What color do you want to try or play with this spring/summer season?

Due to this bonus post, I will not be posting on Monday, March 24th but be sure to check out the this Mondays post here.

Now make sure to check out the rest of the ladies of Ageless Style, link-up your own blog post and leave a comment.

Casual to Dressy Valentines Day Looks

Welcome to the last day of January, the longest month of the year!  Tomorrow February will be upon us and I find February usually goes by rather quickly.   Are you someone that looks forward to Valentine's Day?  Do you do something special with your partner, girlfriends or kiddos?  I've said it before on this blog, V-day isn't something we really celebrate around here.  I like to decorate and I enjoy the festivities with the kids at school, but Mr. and I don't make a big deal of it for the most part.  Sometimes, if it lands on a weekend, we will plan to go out for dinner, or we get a nice box of chocolates and wine to enjoy, but it isn't a tradition or expectation.

I do however like to put an outfit or two that I can wear around the holiday for fun.  I've featured Valentines day looks in the past here and here.  Today I am showing you how I created a really simple shirt to wear to work, but also how it can be dressed up for a date night.  I purchased the long sleeved tee at the Gap outlet for $10 and used my Circuit Air 2 to create this cute XOXO tee.  I love that it's super simple and I can just throw it on with jeans or black pants for work and look festive.  While I've been eyeing up a few cute sweaters, I decided to refrain from spending money in January as I am hoping to go shopping in February when we get away to the mountains and hit up some stores we don't have locally.

Casual Look

This is 100% going to be a look I'll wear this year.  I love how red looks paired with white jeans.  It's super simple and easy to pull together.  I paired it up with simple gold studs, necklace, metallic flats and a cup of coffee to take to work.  The perfect casual day outfit.

Dinner Look

I actually really like how this everyday shirt looks dressed up with tights, the black and white checkered skirt, and  my new black purse.  I added some dangly, statement earrings to dress it up and I am ready to have a lovely dinner out with Mr. or girlfriends or maybe we'll do a mix of the two and go out on a double date.

What are your Valentine's Day plans?

Do you plan an outfit or two that gives a nod to the holiday

or do you carry on as usual?

Ageless Style: Winter White With a Splash of Periwinkle

I am here with the ladies of Ageless Style for our monthly link-up, every third Thursday of the month.  This months periwinkle color prompt was inspired by Pantones color of the year, Very Peri.  Although Very Peri has a distinct violet red undertone, Periwinkle has a border spectrum of blue and violet hues.  I decided to use my Periwinkle blazer as my pop of color in a winter white outfit.  I love how this combination came together.  I am a big fan of monochromatic looks but this time I decided to add a twist of soft color with the blazer, and then the booties are navy suede staying in the same blue family.  I kept my jewelry really soft and subtle with winter whites, sliver and soft pastels beads in my bracelet.  With the freshly fallen snow as a a backdrop the pictures came out even better than I could have imagined.  I recently wore this exact outfit to work.  People always wonder how I can wear white as a prekindergarten teacher, but I honestly don't ever worry about it much.  Bleach is my best friend and I've had these white jeans for YEARS!

This blazer has become a favorite of mine since buying it in early fall  and you can see how I've styled it here in three different ways.  One of my goals in the fall was to add more blazers to my wardrobe because they pair so well with jeans, dress pants, and dresses.  I also like how in the spring and summer they can easily be substituted for a coat and they instantly dress an outfit up.

Be sure to check out all the Ageless Style ladies and how they interpreted this prompt for more ideas, and be sure to link-up with us below.  Thank you for stopping by and this Thursday post is instead of my weekly Monday, Jan. 24th post.  See you the following Monday!

Ageless Style: Five Holiday Looks & Link-Up

Welcome to the Ageless Style link-up which happens the third Thursday of each month.  This month Carrie from A Simple Lovely View choose the prompt of showcasing out holiday looks.  I had big plans of shooting a new to me dress but it didn't happen because life and also snap it got real cold around here!  So instead I am going to showcase five looks that I will be recycling throughout the holiday season.  Check them out and be sure to blog hop to see what the other ladies are wearing.

#1 The Statement Outfit:  Is it the velvet red or the shimmery mantellic or the chunky gold plated necklace that makes the statement?  All of them independently are amazing but together they definitely have a WOW factor.    I loved this combination soooooo much.  The rich velvet really pops and complements the shimmer that the skirt provides.  Honestly, I don't think it's tooo much at all and I love this outfit and it always makes me feel beautiful.  If you don't have a pleated, metallic skirt in your closet you NEED one!

#2 Asymmetrical Ruffle Dress:  I wore this a few years ago at the holidays and it's still in my closet because it's just a beautifully fitted dress.  It pulls into the waist in just the right place and honestly makes me look curvy in a good way!  The asymmetrical ruffle pulls your eyes down so they don't linger tooo long on the tummy area which is a bonus for me.  Add a scarf for a little extra warmth.

#3 Stay Warm in a Sweater Dress:  This dress is OLD you guys but it's a keeper.  It's a bit tricky to see but the dress has like a sparkly thread through it that just makes it shimmer and shine in the most subtle way.  Pair it with leggings or go bare legs depending on your weather!

#4 Comfort for the Win:  This was a splurge for me last year and it's sadly sold out on the Smash and Tess website  but you can check out some of their other rompers here.  It's a burgundy, velvet romper and it's like pajamas in the best way.  You can read my post here, but I actually didn't like it at all when I first put it on but fell in love the more I wore it.  In fact I have been eyeing up the velvet green one because I love it so much.  How things have changed!

#5 The Classy Look:  Although you may think this dress is black, it's actually navy and it's been used for many occasions.  I paired it up with rose gold jewelry from my favorite company Hillberg and Berk, and a beautiful shimmery pink duster.  This really is a classy look for church, Christmas dinner, holiday staff party, winter wedding or NYE.

What will I wear this year?  I DON'T know but what I do know is that I am wearing the romper this weekend to celebrate Anya's birthday with  our families.  And I'll worry about the other outfits later on, but I clearly have a few to choose from.

Now go check out all these amazing women and get inspired regardless of your age, style, location, and lifestyle.
